G.H. WHITELEY
The Lawrenceville School – Mid Distance

George Henry Whiteley Jr graduated in Lawrenceville Prep’s Class of 1906 and specialized in the half mile run (880 yards).

A late comer to the sport of track and field, in only the fourth meet of his running career Whiteley broke the world scholastic record for the half mile.  He set the new record on the 19th of May 1906 at the Middle States Championship held on the Franklin Field track in Philadelphia.  His record time was 1:57.4.

Whiteley attended Princeton University and became the top college half miler in the country.  At Princeton he set a new personal best of 1:56.5.  He also won the 1910 college national championship (IC4A) with a time of 1:57.0 to cap off his senior year.

Whiteley retired from running after graduating from Princeton.  He went on to become president of Dentsply International Incorporated where he led the company in the field of cutting edge dental technology.

His school record at Lawrenceville Prep lasted 58 years.
