Prep A States: Bartlett amazes with 3200m state record

Peddie hosted the NJISAA Prep A Track & Field Championships last Friday, May 1, and the meet produced fast times, big throws, and soaring leaps — along with one of the most remarkable performances in New Jersey track history. And congrats to the Lawrenceville girls on their team championship!

Bartlett Breaks 3200m Record

A week after breaking the state 3000m record in a great duel at the Penn Relays, Blair Bartlett (Lawrenceville, Jr.) added the state outdoor 3200m record to her growing collection by running a stunning 9:45.29! She set a blistering pace right from the gun, hit the halfway point at 4:46, and amazingly still came back in sub-5:00, including a final lap of 71 seconds to seal the record.

While this time is roughly equivalent to her converted 3000m mark from Franklin Field, the way Bartlett ran this race was arguably even more impressive: she ran almost the entire 3200m alone, with no competition except the clock. But that’s never stopped Bartlett, who has one of the most remarkable internal drives of any runner to come through New Jersey. She similarly set the indoor 3200m and 2-Mile state record by running uncontested.

Bartlett’s mark trimmed 1 second off the five-day-old state record of 9:46.78 by WWP North’s Allison Lee, and those two girls are now US #3 and US #4 this season. We’re absolutely spoiled to have such incredible distance talent in this area right now.

Boys Sprints & Hurdles

Hun’s Justin Bibeau (left) takes the 100m win by the narrowest of margins, while his teammates Warren Hernandez (center) and Avery Radom (right) also run very fast for 3rd and 4th. | 2L Race Services

Justin Bibeau (Hun, Jr.) delivered the sprint performance of the meet, winning the 100m by a razor-thin margin of just 0.002 over Blair's Mayan Muchugia. And it was a blazing fast race — his time of 10.80 cut nearly a quarter-second off his previous best of 11.04 and makes him #7 in the state this spring. Bibeau also doubled back to win the 200m in 22.28.

His senior teammates Warren Hernandez and Avery Radom were also on fire and set PRs in the fast 100m final. Hernandez finished just a step behind the leaders in 10.88 for 3rd, and Radom stopped the clock in 11.04 for 4th. That trio gives Hun the #1, #3, and #4 times in the county right now.

Dasyer Bullock (Peddie, Sr.) took over the top of the county leaderboard in the 400mH after running a 2-second PR of 56.62 for the win.

Boys Distance

Hejyule Bae-Robinson (Lawrenceville, Jr.) won the 1600m in thrilling fashion, edging Pingry’s James Draper by just 0.02 seconds with a PR of 4:28.87. Bae-Robinson was back in 6th after the first lap before gradually working his way through the field and then uncorking a 62 bell lap to catch Draper at the line. Right behind those two was Elie Meyer (Peddie, Sr.), who also broke 4:30 for the first time with a 4:29.34 for 3rd place. Those times are #4 and #5 in the county this spring.

Luca Romanelli (Peddie, Sr.) went wire-to-wire in the 800m, winning with a nice PR of 1:59.00. Gaining on him towards the end was Arunav Sarkar (Lawrenceville, Jr.), who broke 2:00 for the first time with a 1:59.36 for 2nd place.

Boys Field

Jabralyn Jones (Lawrenceville, Sr.) claimed the shot put title with a throw of 48-3.5, and he also took 3rd in the discus with a 138-7. Just 2 inches ahead of him in the discus was teammate Brian Gomez (Lawrenceville, Jr.), who set a PR of 138-9 for 2rd place, which is #3 in Mercer County.

Girls Sprints & Hurdles

Tessa Hughes (Peddie, Sr.) capped her Prep A career with a remarkable triple: she won the 100mH (15.28), defended her 400mH title (1:04.75), and claimed her fourth consecutive high jump title with a clearance of 5-0.
Jael Gaines (Lawrenceville, Sr.) swept the short sprints, winning the 100m in a PR of 12.46 — a 0.16-second PR — and the 200m in a season’s best of 26.22. Yasmin Willie (Lawrenceville, So.) completed the Big Red’s full sprint sweep by winning the 400m in a PR of 59.68.

Girls Distance

Caitlin Williams (Peddie, Sr.) went out with Bartlett at her blistering pace for the first 600 meters before settling in and still churning out a 14-second PR of 11:17.78 for 2nd place.

Shanel Tan (Peddie, Sr.) ran an outdoor PR of 5:17.26 to win the 1600m, and Rory Laubach (Lawrenceville, Jr.) won the 800m in 2:21.57.

Girls Field

Anna Casciano (Hun, Sr.) won both the shot put (43-0.75) and discus (119-3) for the second straight year. Counting indoors, Casciano has now won six Prep A shot put titles. Mya Smith (Hun, Sr.) won the javelin with a huge throw of 124-3, a mark that stands at MC #1 and NJ #7.

Aurielle Ellington-McIntosh (Lawrenceville, So.) PR’d to win the long jump at 16-0, and her classmate Aashna Vishwakarma (Lawrenceville, So.) likewise set a new PR of 32-4 to win the triple jump.
